Career Learning Explorations 10 (CLE)

I LOVE teaching CLE 10.

This course is one that offers students a real opportunity to explore themselves at a time in life when they are pushing and pushing to figure out just who they are. Some student try to brush it off because it is not a "hard science" course or because it doesn't "teach them anything  important". Actually it does. It teaches them how to understand who they are, what they like, want and are good at. It asks them to plan for the future and the shows them how to make those plans become reality. This course shows them how to make a resume, apply for a job, take an interview, and maybe even keep the job that they will get with all of those other skills under their belts.

CLE 10 is a GRAD REQUIREMENT: students who do not pass this course do not GRADUATE from high school. They may be able to do it by correspondence, but they WILL HAVE TO pass it.

Starting in 2018/19, the course has  been renamed Career Learning Explorations 10 (instead of Planning), but it will have largely the same curriculum and still be a mandatory course for graduation. Students currently in Grade 10 MUST pass CLE 10.

Below is the course description that I hand out to the students. If you want to read the whole document yourself, you can click here.

The aim of CLE 10 is to enable students to develop the skills and attitudes they need to become self-directed individuals who set goals, make thoughtful decisions, and take responsibility for pursuing their goals throughout life. This course will also help students understand their interests, values, skills, strengths, aptitudes, personality characteristics and behaviours that influence their life and the lives of others. Students will also have the opportunity to research a variety of educational and career paths, taking into consideration their knowledge, skills and attitudes, while recognizing their own unique qualities and characteristics.
